It’s funny to think how far the term Virtual Assistant has come.
Not so long ago, people heard it and thought of Siri or Alexa — or maybe someone sending invoices from a kitchen table. Fast-forward to today, and the role has evolved into something far more strategic, creative and essential for modern businesses.
When I first started Miss Kantoor back in 2016, most clients simply wanted help “getting their admin under control.” Inbox management, spreadsheets, diary juggling, chasing payments — the kind of things that keep business owners awake at night.
But the VA world has grown up. Now, we’re not just ticking off tasks — we’re actively helping businesses run smarter.
From Support Staff to Strategic Partner
What’s changed?
Quite simply: trust and technology.
Clients are realising a good VA isn’t just there to take orders. We’re often the person behind the smooth operations — the one keeping projects moving, creating processes, handling communications, and building the systems that make a business feel less chaotic.
With better tools and cloud systems, VAs can do almost anything from anywhere. But the real shift is mindset. The best partnerships happen when a VA becomes part of the bigger picture — understanding the client’s goals, anticipating needs, and suggesting smarter ways of working.
Tech, Tools & a Touch of Humanity
There’s no denying that AI and automation have shaken things up. But instead of replacing VAs, they’ve actually elevated what we can offer.
Automation can handle the repetitive stuff — freeing up headspace for us to focus on creativity, strategy, and human connection (the things bots still can’t quite master).
At Miss Kantoor, I use tools like ChatGPT to support my work — not to replace it. It helps speed up research, spark ideas, and fine-tune content, but everything that goes out has my eyes, experience and personality on it. Clients can feel the difference.
The VA of Today (and Tomorrow)
The modern VA wears many hats — admin pro, content creator, marketer, project coordinator, digital organiser, and sometimes unofficial therapist!
It’s this flexibility that makes the role so valuable. Every client is different. One day I might be writing a patient newsletter for a GP practice; the next, creating social media campaigns for a local retailer or helping an engineering firm prepare for an industry event.
And that’s what I love about it — being part of so many different stories and helping people reclaim their time, calm and focus along the way.
In Short…
The virtual assistant has evolved from being a “nice-to-have” into a genuine business asset — a blend of organisation, creativity, strategy and empathy.
We’re not just assistants anymore. We’re partners, thinkers, problem-solvers, and often the quiet force behind a company’s success.
If you’ve been thinking about getting support but weren’t sure where to start, maybe it’s time to see how a modern VA could fit into your business. Because the role might have changed — but the goal hasn’t: to make your life a whole lot easier.
