You’ve probably heard people talk about sales and marketing as if they’re the same thing. I hear it all the time – especially in small businesses where one person is usually doing both! (Hands up if that’s you – because it’s definitely been me 🙋♀️.)
But here’s the thing: sales and marketing aren’t the same. They’re two different parts of your business puzzle – and getting your head around both can make a massive difference to how you attract customers and grow.
Let’s break it down in simple, no-nonsense terms.
💡 So, What Actually Is Marketing?
Marketing is everything you do to get noticed. It’s about popping up on people’s radar and giving them a reason to be interested in what you offer.
You know those Facebook posts you spend ages writing? The emails you send out to let people know what’s going on? The pretty graphics you make for Instagram? Yep – all marketing.
Marketing is the stuff that:
- Spreads the word about your business
- Builds trust and connection
- Helps people find you (hello, Google search!)
👉 It’s not about the hard sell – it’s about showing up consistently so that when someone does need what you offer, you’re already in their mind.
💬 And What’s Sales Then?
Sales is when someone’s already interested, and you’re helping them make that final decision.
It’s that:
- DM you reply to
- Quote you send
- Phone call you have where you answer their questions
- Cold call you make to introduce your services directly to a potential customer
👉 It’s personal. 👉 It’s one-to-one. 👉 It’s where the actual yes happens.
Sales is about building trust, listening properly, and making sure the person feels confident to buy from you.
🔹 A quick note on cold calling: Cold calling is a classic sales method where you reach out directly to someone who hasn’t contacted you first. It can feel a bit old school, but when done right, it’s still a powerful way to start conversations and open doors.
🔄 Where We Get It Mixed Up
This is where it gets a bit blurry, right? Because sometimes you’re doing both at the same time – especially if you’re a small business owner juggling everything.
👉 Posting on social media? That’s marketing.
👉 Chatting to someone who comments on your post? That’s sales.
They’re part of the same journey – but they’re not the same thing. And honestly, it’s really easy to focus on one and forget the other (I’ve definitely been there!).
🚀 Why You Need Both to Grow Your Business
If you’re only doing marketing – you’re building awareness but possibly missing out on following up. If you’re only focusing on sales – you might be running out of people to talk to because you’re not consistently visible.
💡 They need each other.
Marketing fills your pipeline. Sales turns those people into happy customers.
When you get the balance right – that’s where the magic happens.
